VERNAZZA (IT)
The small fishing village Vernazza is probably the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country.
VERNAZZA’s HISTORY
It was founded about 1000 A.D. and was ruled by the Republic of Genoa starting in 1276. The medieval castle, Belforte, was built in the mid-1500’s, primarily to protect the village from pirates.
MY OPINION
Vernazza, located in the heart of the Cinque Terre, is the perfect starting point to explore the area and all the other villages. There is a small harbor which is surrounded by discreet, colorful typical Ligurian houses and a small charming square which is full of good restaurants and bars. I can say that it is a place that takes you to another era, a place that radiates romance and that gives you the opportunity for relaxed moments but also for exploration. Although it is a small place, I recommend you to experience Vernazza for five days and it might not be enough.
MUST SEE – The church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia
There is a small, sandy beach in the natural harbor of the village, there where is the Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia. Τhe church is built on a rock overlooking the sea and is the most photographed spot in the village.
PLACES TO VISIT
1. The Tower of the Doria Castle, built in the 15th century to protect the village from pirates, is located above the bay and the small port of Vernazza.
